Environment and Pollution

What is environment ? The environment refers to the air, water, and land in which people, animals and plants live. So human beings, animals, plants, air, water, and soil are the main elements of the environment. The natural forces such as storms, cyclones and earthquakes are also a part of this environment. Climate is thus a condition of the environment. All things that make up the environment are interrelated.

The world  is producing millions of tons of domestic rubbish and toxic industrial waste each year, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to find suitable locations to get rid of all the refuse. The disposal of various kings of waste is seriously pollution the environment. We know that air is an important element of our environment and our air is polluted by smoke. Man makes fires to cook food, make bricks, melt tar for road construction and to do may other things.

Forests play a vital role in the total scheme of the world. They not only provide the living space for most of the world’s wildlife but also help humans in various ways. Humans get most of their wood from forest trees. Many plants and trees provide them with vegetables fruits as well. But humans are destroying forest. Trees are being cut down for the wood itself and for wood-pulp which  is used in paper-making. Forests are being destroyed for road-building and to provide land for large herds of cattle to graze on. The effects of this mass destruction of forest could eventually affect us all. Dark forests absorb heat more effectively than lighter crops and grasses. The process of deforestation can altogether change the weather patterns of the world. Even more serious is the greenhouse effect.

First Men in the Moon : Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, Edwin E. Aldrin

Six  missions to the moon was made and a total of 12 astronauts walked on the moon. One of the missions Apollo-13 failed and they had to return. But The First  man on the moon On July 20, 1969  with Apollo-11 was Commander Neil Armstrong who made history with Michael Collins, command module pilot; and , Edwin E. Aldrin Jr., lunar module pilot. On July 16, 1969, the Apollo 11 launched from the Kennedy Space Center. After completing the successful mission On July 24, the astronauts returned home aboard the command module Columbia into the Pacific Ocean.

First Man in Space on April 12, 1961 : Yuri Gagarin

Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin (9 March 1934 to 27 March 1968) who was a Russian Soviet pilot and cosmonaut. He was born in the village of Klushino on 9 March 1934. He was interested about space and planet and  He was the first man who Journey into space. He completed his technical school in 1955 and entered at Pilot's School. He got married in 1957, after gaining his pilot's wings in a MiG-15. He won the Rank of Senior Lieutenant on 6 November, 1959. On 12 April 1961 (Vostok 1) he became the first man on space.

Scientists have always wondered if there is life anywhere out in the space besides us. They have joined together on a major project called the Communication extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (CETI) which seeks to establish contact with any other living beings in the universe.

It was thought that there is life on Mars. But two Viking spacecrafts that landed on Mars in 1976 did not provide much evidence of life. The Pictures sent by them showed Mars as having a red sky instead of a blue one like ours and pinkish iron-rich soil. Its gravity is about half as strong as that of earth so that the atmosphere is also much thinner than our planet. It has deserts, high mountains, volcanoes, craters, grooves like canals as well as summer and winter seasons. But there are no trees or signs of any life forms. However, a close inspection of a meteorite from Mars that fell on the earth has revealed tiny fossils like bacteria 3.6 billion years old. This proved that some form of life existed there in the past. But who knows space probes have also been sent to planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. It will take years for a space probe to reach a planet and many more years to analyze all the data sent to earth by these probes.

Global Warming or Greenhouse Effect or Climate Change

There have been many alarming reports that the world’s climate is undergoing a significant change. All these reports provide strong evidence that world temperatures are increasing day by day. This increase in global worming is caused by increased amounts of carbon dioxide around the earth. Most climatologists believe that the greenhouse effect is the most likely cause of this global worming.

Greenhouse effect is the gradual warming of the air surrounding the earth as a result of heat being trapped by environmental pollution. This is exemplified by the destruction and burning down of fossil fuels and tropical rain forests, by traffic that clogs up city streets, by the rapid growth of industry, the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in packaging and manufacturing commercial products, the use of detergents such as washing powder and washing-up liquid and so on.

The oceans are also said to be affected both because of human waste and because of pollution caused by industrial waste products, oil seeping from damaged supertankers and from other maritime disasters. The main culprits for global warming are carbon dioxide gas, produced by the burning of fossil fuels and forests, and pollutants such as methane and chlorofluorocarbons.

Climatologists predict that by midway through the next century, temperatures may have risen by as much as 4 Degree Celsius. This could catastrophically reduce mankind’s ability to grow food, destroy or severely damage wildlife and wilderness, raise sea levels and thereby flood coastal areas and farmland. The alarming news about the lower part of the country is that as a result of the rise of the sea may one day go under water.

Flowing Salty Water On Mars : NASA Reports New Evidence Of Liquid Water On The Red Planet

NASA’s scientists announced on August 04, 2011 that provide additional evidence of seasonal highly salty water flows on  the Red Planet which also empowers the possibility of life on the Mars.

According to scientists, Salt lowers the freezing point of water and the temperature on Mars during these flows ranges from 23-27 degrees Celsius. Temperature on Mars can go down to minus 128 degrees Celsius. The liquid water on the Mars would be extremely salty and lie under the surface. Their was frozen carbon dioxide (CO2) that might have been flooding.

NASA has been looking for water on the Red Planet for 15 years. In 2008, NASA  found minerals in soil which indicated that there could have been a presence of water at one time.
